Youth Risk Reduction Program Volunteers

Youth Risk Reduction Volunteers help empower young people to reach out for support and to support their peers through emotional crisis. Volunteers have the opportunity to connect with youth directly in classrooms, youth organizations, and various community events.

Volunteers must commit to volunteer for a minimum of 10 classroom presentations. In order to be more age-relatable to the youth, we prefer applicants who are between 18-35 years of age.

There is a training fee of $50 to cover background check.

Youth Risk Reduction Volunteers…

  • Help provide suicide risk reduction trainings to middle and high school students, in classrooms, during school hours.
  • Help provide suicide risk reduction trainings to youth organizations during the school year and summer break (June-August)
  • Participate in youth outreach events, such as tabling at school health fairs.
  • Provide emotional support to youth, as needed
  • Learn and practice basic counseling skills, suicide assessment, and crisis intervention skills
  • Gain public speaking and classroom management experience

Application process:

  • All prospective volunteers must complete an application (here) by November 16, 2017.
  • Volunteer candidates must attend an interview, which includes giving a 3-5 minute mock presentation

Once accepted, volunteers must:

1) Complete volunteer training. Volunteer training involves…

  • Overview of the history of SFSP, background information on suicide, and prevalent issues that youth face.
  • Presentation rehearsal with feedback from staff and fellow volunteers
  • Learning and practicing basic counseling skills, suicide assessment and intervention
