San Francisco Suicide Prevention (SFSP) is the oldest volunteer crisis line in the United States. Founded in 1963 with the initial focus of providing telephone intervention to people experiencing suicidal crisis, the focus of the agency has gradually shifted from strictly suicide prevention to more general counseling services. Services are provided 24 hours a day by over 150 trained volunteers with the supervision of a small multidisciplinary staff.

24-hour Crisis line: 415/781-0500.
Any crisis can lead to suicide. If you are worried about yourself or a friend, call your nearest crisis line. The number can usually be found on page 2 of the white pages of your local phone book or on the American Association of Suicidology website.
